BMW history


 BMW's history begins in 1916 with the founding of Bayerische Flugzeugwerke, an aircraft engine manufacturerIn 1917, Rapp Motorenwerke became Bayerische Motoren Werke GmbH, which later transferred its operations to Bayerische Flugzeugwerke. This transfer, along with the company's founding date, is recognized as the official founding of BMW in 1916. After World War I, BMW shifted to producing motorcycles and other products like farm equipment and railway brakes. They entered the automobile business in 1928.

  • 1916: Bayerische Flugzeugwerke (BFW) founded. 
  • 1917: Rapp Motorenwerke renamed Bayerische Motoren Werke GmbH (BMW). 
  • 1922: BMW's engine construction operations transferred to BFW. 
  • 1928: BMW enters the automobile business. 
  • 1930s: BMW built its first sports car and developed the BMW IIIa aircraft engine.
